New Movie Releases Reviewed in 7 Words Each
Midnight in Paris (limited) - So... would that be five o'clock here?
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Worst detergent, ever. Just made new stains.
You know, I'm not sure if "o'clock" counts as one word or two. I may have cheated there.
So, without really going into too much detail, I've been a bit sick for awhile and spent Monday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon in the hospital. As such I didn't get around to anyone's blogs, nor did I have time for my own. I'm a bit loopy still at the moment so I'm going to keep this short.
I'm not sure if anyone actually wanted another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The first one was great; a blast of fun. The second was already a little heavy, but I still enjoyed it. The third... horrible. Way too long, rambling, and unnecessary with so many story lines. Still this new one (along with a dozen other films) has helped me to realize something. I'm tired of Johnny Depp. He has been for many years a favorite actor of mine, but for awhile now it seems like he's made every attempt to star in whatever crappy film he can, or at the very least, get his name attached to the project. I don't hate him, I just think I need a break.
Actually I had an interesting conversation the other day about him vs River Phoenix. I've always sort of thought of Depp in a way, as the poor man's Phoenix. Obviously, his being alive means that statement doesn't entirely work. What I mean to say is, that there's a similar style and feel. But the difference is, Depp has always been attracted to more cartoonish roles. Even his more serious roles, are often odd caricatures. Whereas Phoenix in his short span tended towards more solid parts. He could be in a silly movie and still play the role dead straight. I really think that if River Phoenix were still alive today, Johnny Depp would have less work.
And in case you were wondering, this discourse was brought to you in part by my rewatching Sneakers again. Man, I love that movie.
As I said, I'm keeping it short this week.
Assuming that the world doesn't end tomorrow, have a great weekend everyone!
get better!
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon!!!!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Notice how we ignore all your reviews just to focus on your health? This is how much we love you, but thanks for the reviews too!

ReplyDeleteOh how I loved Sneakers. As for the Pirates movie, I will watch it pirated dvd when one of the asian guys here at work gets it this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're feeling better, man!
ReplyDeleteRiver was my crush for years. And... while I like Johnny sometimes... I get a little weary of the weirdo-schtick. I thought he was terrible in The Tourist. Blah.
Now Sneakers is an awesome movie! And hopefully this is the last Pirates movie.
ReplyDeleteYou poor thing! I'm glad that you're out of the hospital!
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting comparing River and Depp. I think you are right, River may have gotten some of Depp's roles. I did love Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland and Dillinger. River could have played Dillinger for sure. Now you've got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteI liked the first Priate movie too. Walked out of number 2 and didn't see 3. They must make tons of money since they are making another one.
Sneakers is a great flick. I enjoy the Pirates movies. However, they didn't film any of this one here on the central coast like they did with At World's End....may have to boycott this one on principle.
ReplyDeleteWe should have gotten adjoining rooms in the hospital. Feel better!
yeah sneakers was an awesome movie. I was sick of Pirates after the first one.
ReplyDeleteHope you are better now...Pirates got boring in World's end...couldn't even bear it halfway....never seen River's work except as child artist, me thinks....maybe Sneakers though not sure....without Orlando and Keira, despite Depp, Cruz and Rush...not wasting my rupees in a multiplex...like Ollie will wait to rip my cousin's Dvd....
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I missed that you were sick. I hope you are feeling better. Hospital...eek!
ReplyDeleteSneakers......awesome.....
Couldn't agree with you more about Depp being in everything. I think it's mainly the fault of Tim Burton and his remakes of films that don't need to be remade, but really, I didn't think I'd ever be tired of Depp or Burton.
ReplyDeleteHope you're doing ok/getting better ...
ReplyDeleteRiver Phoenix is fantastic in Sneakers. His oddly serious character cracks me up in that.
