Microreviewing Every Movie I’ve Seen – Set 1

What is micro-reviewing? It’s giving a snapshot of a movie’s content and worth. What’s works, what doesn’t, who might enjoy it, and whether it’s worth owning, renting, waiting for it to come on TV, or just skipping altogether.

For no particular reason, I have decided to attempt to microreview every movie I've ever seen, and so, here is Set #1:

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Surprisingly, you care about the main robot-boy. Special effects are decent.
Cons: Too weird. Unsatisfying ending.
Who’ll like it: Big sci-fi or Stanley Kubrick fans.

The Abyss (1989)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Lots of good, tense action, and yet still quite emotional.
Cons: The alien-creature/sci-fi element is a little silly.
Who’ll like it: Action or sci-fi movie fans who aren’t claustrophobic.

About a Boy (2002)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Good interactions between an immature man and a mature boy.
Cons: It’s only about the characters but the characters aren’t that enjoyable.
Who’ll like it: People who love Hugh Grant.

Air Force One (1997)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Presidential plane makes for a good and unique setting.
Cons: Hijackers make too many unrealistically dumb mistakes.
Who’ll like it: People who really like Harrison Ford and mediocre action flicks.

Aladdin (1992, Animated)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Everyone’s dream come true (3 wishes) with humor.
Cons: A lot of singing, and a somewhat-annoying heroine.
Who’ll like it: Anyone who has liked any Disney animated movie.

All the President’s Men (1976)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Very important event in America’s history, fairly well told.
Cons: Slowish at times.
Who’ll like it: Conspiracy theorists and modern history lovers.

Always (1989)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Fighting forest fires with planes, plus an inspirational ghost, makes for a unique experience.
Cons: Requires the viewer to suspend lots of disbeliefs.
Who’ll like it: People who enjoyed Ghost (1990) or like remakes.

Alice In Wonderland (1951, Animated)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Extremely imaginative.
Cons: Can feel a bit disjointed and is sometimes too nonsensical.
Who’ll like it: Those who generally enjoy animate movies.

Alice In Wonderland (2010)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: Just about the most magic you can fit into one adventure.
Cons: The main character rarely seems to enjoy herself, so neither does the viewer.
Who’ll like it: Lovers of the book, and big fantasy-film fans.

Amadeus (1984)
Rating: Own | Rent | TV | Skip
Pros: The life of Mozart being told by his enemy makes for a very engaging film.
Cons: Too much music toward the end weighs and drags it down.
Who’ll like it: History/biography buffs.

  2. Didn't like the new Alice in Wonderland very much. I do own The Abyss though - director's cut is awesome.

  3. I would list About A Boy as a read. Good book, not so great film. Love that you went with Aladdin as an own.

  4. I give you major props if you are going to follow through with this. I've seen too much stuff to try it myself. Are you done with the "A"'s?

  5. Geof, a few years ago I made a list of all the movies I'd seen, so that makes this a little easier to do. But, no, I'm not done with the A's. Got a few more.

And Alex, I debated about making The Abyss an "Own" since I own it myself, but decided it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea. I've never seen the director's cut, though, so I'll check that out.

  10. i have to be honest: i assumed that having gary oldman in it would have bumped air force one up to a rent at least.
also, i would suggest about a boy to everyone who enjoys nick hornsby's books (high fidelity is amazing!!).

  11. Nice list...good thing I don't own any of them...I prefer Alladin of the books to the Disney version...

  12. Some of you obviously forgot to take your LSD before watching Alice in Wonderland. No other way to explain your pan of it...
