Christina Ricci: By The Numbers

Most of the time when I'm running the numbers on someone who used to be a child star, I think it might almost be more fair to rate their two halves of career separate from each other. As most early careers are littered with horrible kids movies. In the case of Christina Ricci, she started off to an odd start right away with films like the Addams Family and its far superior sequel. Needless to say, I felt in her case, it would be fair to view it as a whole.

First a quick rundown of how this all works for anyone new:

I take all the films an actor or actress has been in and break them down into three categories, 'Good' 'Bad' and 'Okay.' I do not count TV appearances or Made for TV movies. Afterwards a quick analysis will show whether or not they're a good actor by the numbers. Invariably there is a 2-3 +/- point bias on a person to person basis. Also, since 'ok' movies are not bad they count towards the positive column in the overall figuring. If, by the numbers, they fall in the 50 - 60% range, they're a bad actor; 61 - 70% good actor, and 71 - 80% great actor. Anything higher is unlikely, but will be classified as "elite."

Now let's see those numbers:

I'm not a fan of Christina Ricci by any means, but nor do I particularly dislike her. She has delivered some pretty great performances, but a lot of the time she just disappears into a films background for me. The numbers seem to reflect this trend. With 62% positive over 38% negative, she just barely steps into the good actress category. What I do like about her and what could either keep her in the positive column or be her downfall, is that she tends to choose interesting and different films. I think her numbers are one that will be interesting to revisit a few years down the line.

Thanks to Chuck for this week's pick!

  2. You're right about her disappearing, but maybe that's what makes her good?
I know nothing of these things, but it's always interesting to see how these pan out.

She's so perpetually baby-faced, I wonder if as she ages she'll be more memorable, or just look like an old baby (and how that might affect the roles she chooses)?

  3. I'd like to see her do more. maybe her hight limits the roles she's offered.

  4. Trying to remember the name of that movie she was in with Demi Moore and a few others....escaping me right now...but I thought it was pretty good.

  6. Cottage Child, Now I just hope she makes a movie when she's older about being the oldest baby. Comedic gold there.

Marlene, are you thinking of Now and Then?

Copy, She wasn't in FD2. Are you thinking of Cursed?

  7. Go figure. I know who she is, and could easily pick her out of a lineup, but I've never seen any of her movies. Wait. Was she in Gone With the Wind? I could have sworn I remember seeing her faint over a dead soldier. Or, wait, maybe that that was Ashley. Hard to tell.

  9. She's not my favorite actress, but I'm a sucker for the movie Penelope where she plays a girl with a pig nose. It's such a sweet love story. :)

  11. I have 3 words for you...Black Snake Moan...how can you not like a movie with a hot, slutty white babe chained up in a black mans cabin in the woods down south??? Sorry, I can only think of CR one way.

  12. Those numbers seem about right ... and I agree about her mix of movies. Sort of a toss of the dice when you see one of her movies, which is cool.

  13. I think Christina Ricci has been consistently cool....
Even if she does creep me out a little.

  14. When actors consistently play the same type of character one has to wonder if they're acting at all. Do you think she could ever play a character that wasn't dark, creepy or a loner?

  16. I liked Ricci in her teenish avatars...I guess baby faced means less mature, heavy roles your way...but she is better than the glam sticks with wooden faces who's acting consists of lip biting and blinking and stuttering...hell, even Hugh Grant started creeping me out towards the fag end...
why do action heroes all over the world not retire when they look their age onscreen...?
love the new look of your blog...can't you link your header to the latest comic post? just asking...

  17. I agree she's a little creepy, but there's something likable about her too--something alert in her eyes, as if she's thinking and taking note of the world. There are worse things for an actress to be than a tiny indy freak!

  18. She's not even close to being one of my favorites, but she was really good in "the opposite of sex."
