News For Sci-Fi Geeks (well it was news to me)

While doing research for a post I stumbled upon the fact that not only is Harry Harrison still alive, but he's written a brand spanking new Stainless Steel Rat novel! If you're unfamiliar with the name Harry Harrison and\or 'Slippery Jim diGrizz' I have one of two suggestions for you, either go now, to a book store or library to procure the books in question, or else read a different post of mine cause this won't be of interest to you.

I've loved the books ever since my sister turned me on to them when I was little. With the last book and the unsatisfactory direction that Harrison took the character, I was more than a little saddened that it looked like the series would end without redemption for The Rat. The news that a new book will be released this summer makes me very happy. Course none of the artwork or descriptions for the book have been released, but you can find the first three chapters of the book made available to read by the author here: http://harryharrison.wordpress.com/2009/07/13/the-stainless-steel-rat-returns-chapter-1/

As you'll see for yourself, the antihero looks in fine form. I have to say, reading 'porcuswine' has a bit of the same feeling as coming home after being gone a long time. I didn't read more than half the first chapter though, largely because I know it will only make the waiting worse. For now I think I shall go revisit the series in preparation.

  1. I never read them, but I recognize the title because my best friend read them in high school. I remember thinking they sounded cool, but I was stubborn...

  2. If you like sci-fi at all, you should give them a go. While I never got into anything else he wrote, those books are among my favorites.

    Pure pulp brilliance.

  3. I can't believe it! This is a real blast from the past for me. How do I know Harry? Did he ever feature in 2000 AD?

  4. They did a short run of a stainless steel rat comic, which I believe was through 2000 AD.

I've never read one unfortunately. So have you read them?

  5. I have hundreds of them in my mother's attic. They're my brother's really, but I love them. I taught myself to draw by copying the characters. It meant I got into art class instead of being forced to do home economics, so they'll always be special to me!

Thanks for reminding me. Your blog is cool!

  6. Thanks a lot.

That is so awesome. I love the older magazines like that. The artwork is amazing, I don't blame you for becoming entranced by them.

  7. All right - I'm convinced. Next time I hit the used book store by me I'll be looking for this guy.

    Web 2.0 works its magic.
